After a COVID hiatus, we are grateful to have returned for our tenth annual trip to rural Guatemala to provide medical and surgical care at Clinica Maxeña! Our amazing team of doctors and staff saw hundreds of patients to perform cataract and other eye surgeries, while Guatemalan ophthalmology residents joined for mentoring.
Here is a closer look at what this weeklong mission looked like.
- Our team worked with senior level Guatemalan opthalmology residents, sharing knowledge and transferring skills.
- We had the opportunity to work with Dr. Joe Kupko, ophthalmologist from Hamilton Montana, who founded the eye care program more than 30 years ago.
- We met and cared for Guatemalan patients ourselves, many of whom will have traveled for miles to receive eye care.
- We fostered new relationships with other doctors and worked together to give the Guatemalan people the eye care they deserve.
We are grateful for the opportunity to provide direct, hands-on care during our time at Clinica Maxeña, and we are deeply appreciative of the generous donation of time and materials from our doctors and staff that makes this program possible.

I have been seeing Dr. Sheehan for a couple of years and I couldn’t be happier with his help and knowledge. I would highly recommend him for your Medical Eye care. My wife had cataract surgery with Dr. Watkins. She couldn’t even read a road sign prior to surgery. After surgery she has 20/20 in one eye and slightly less in the other. Thank you Dr Watkins!! The doctors and staff at Medical are all extremely professional and helpful.
